In Indian households, the kitchen is the centre of the home and an integral part of the hustle and bustle that happens. All the great memories of any family home revolve around their kitchen, food and of course great health. 

This is why our Principal Designer, Anupam Singh believes that kitchen direction as per Vastu is a crucial aspect to look at when planning the space. With her strong belief, and great motivation we have curated some of the best Vastu tips for kitchen design.

Tip 1: Kitchen Location as Per Vastu

If you have a bare shell in your hands and the liberty to locate the kitchen, then the kitchen direction as per Vastu should be South-East. The reason this direction holds so much importance is that a balance of all elements of Earth is achieved here.

As per vastu kitchen location, Lord Agni reside in the South-East direction, making it the ideal location for a kitchen. The key element in any kitchen is of course fire, for us Indians cook a lot with fire.

If for any reason, you are unable to have the kitchen facing as per vastu in the South-East direction, the North-west direction will be the second best to go ahead with. The only aspect to keep in mind would be to never allocate the kitchen to the north, north-west or south-west location.

Tip 2: Kitchen Entrance Direction as Per Vastu

Something to avoid when deciding on the entrance door of your home kitchen is not to have it placed in a corner. 

The appropriate directions where the door to a kitchen can be ideally placed are east, north and west. As per Vastu shastra, these are considered to be auspicious locations and are good for the growth of positivity in your home.  

It is also better for the kitchen location as per Vastu, for the door to be centrally placed rather than in corners, allowing for more walls to add storage in the space.

Tip 3: Stove dIRECTION as Per Vastu

After the kitchen position as per Vastu is decided, we move towards deciding the stove direction which is another crucial aspect not just for Vastu purposes but for the functionality of the kitchen as well. 

South-East direction is primarily governed by the element of fire, hence, making it the direction for the stove to be in and also the reason why we have the kitchen in south direction. The right thing to do is have your cooktop placed in a way that you face the east direction while cooking. 

Additionally, if the services work out as well in this location then it becomes a win-win situation!

Tip 4: Best Location for the Sink in Kitchen as Per Vastu

Vastu for kitchen sink and stove are two very peculiar parts of designing a kitchen. We always suggest our clients begin here during the planning stage. Once these are put down, it is easier to navigate around the rest of the space.

For the sink, the suggested direction is north-east which is also on the opposite side of the stove. Water and fire are two opposing elements, hence should be on different ends of your kitchen to have an ideal layout.

While planning a kitchen, we also follow a working triangle alongside Vastu Shastra for the kitchen sink and both come to the same conclusion of having the sink, refrigerator and stove in a triangle around the kitchen.

Tip 5: Best Place for Refrigerator in Kitchen as Per Vastu

Refrigerator placement is a huge part of the working triangle to function perfectly and definitely one of the best Vastu tips for kitchen.

It is best to have your refrigerator away from the walls and not placed in a corner as per Vastu and also better for the heat that is generated by the appliance. North-west is a suggested direction for its placement while North-east is considered to be the last direction for it to be placed in.

Tip 6: Where to have your electrical appliances as Per Vastu?

Any kitchen has many appliances except for the fridge and the dishwasher, the bulkier fixtures. As for the smaller appliances which could be hidden away in plain sight, what does Vastu Shastra for kitchen have to say about them? Let’s find out!

From microwaves, ovens, mixers, or any other small appliances should all occupy the south-east direction in your kitchen. This is the same as the direction of the cooktop, which you will see is also convenient in terms of functionality and usage. 

Vastu consultants also suggest avoiding placing the electricals in the north-east direction of the kitchen. Another tip here would be to have enough counter space around your cooktop so you can use all of the appliances with ease. 

Tip 7: Storage Units Place in Kitchen as Per Vastu

One element our clients always mention foremost with kitchen design is the need for storage. There are so many storage items, from grains to utensils that have to be stored away along with ease of use when required. 

Any kitchen according to Vastu should have all the storage items and cabinets for it located on the south or the west wall. This is why you will notice that the grain trolley is in the same line of cabinetry as the cooktop, along with the bigger drawers/shutters for pots and pans.

Most of the tips that we have picked up over time from Vastu Shastra only enhance functionality in the kitchen. 

Tip 8: Best Colours for the Kitchen as Per Vastu Shastra

Colours are often subjective but it is amazing to see how Vastu Shastra also explores moods and emotions when it comes to decision-making for them. 

Brighter and happier colours like greens, reds and yellows are the recommendations on our list. These colours not only improve Vastu aspects but are mood enhancers as well. Immediately you will notice a positive upliftment through the use of brighter colours along the backsplash or on the cabinetry. 

Your kitchen is definitely the space that can be explored in terms of colours. We ourselves love adding splashes of sunshine palettes when designing a kitchen.

Tip 9: Direction of Windows as Vastu

Windows are considered to be gateways to let out negativity from the kitchen and create a balance of positivity inside the home. 

This is why when we are asked about the kitchen should be in which direction? Our answer to this question is often that the decision should be made after giving thought to the window location, overall location and of course the direction of the home.

North, East and North-east directions are most appropriate as per Vastu. These are also directions where you will see the minimum amount of heat coming in, making it the perfect way to let in some shade. 

Tip 10: Where to Have Your Drinking Water Outlet as Per Vastu

This one might seem surprising because it is often not taken into account, but Vastu is all about diving into the detail of it all. 

North-East direction is the suggested location, which is also where your sink will be. The reason that the sink and the water outlet both are located here is that the rays of the sun fall here first in the morning. This would ensure sterilization, making the water also fit for consumption. 

This is also functionally helpful since you can locate the drinking water tap above one of the sink bowls, making it extremely easy to use as well for cooking.
